Revitalization of Kaka‘ako parks continues with parking lot repaving

Two parking lots at Kaka‘ako Waterfront Park to be repaved, restriped requiring closure

KAKA‘AKO -- In the continued effort to revitalize the newly acquired city parks in Kaka‘ako, a project to repave the public parking lots at Kaka‘ako Waterfront Park will begin next week.

This project includes repaving and restriping of the main parking lot near Kaka‘ako Gateway Park Makai and the Point Panic parking lot, which will require the parking lots to be closed during this time.

The work is scheduled to begin on Saturday, Jan. 18 and be completed by Tuesday, Jan. 28, weather permitting. The repaving and restriping will be conducted in phases for particular portions of the parking lots, observing the following work schedule which is subject to change:

  • Ewa-side of Main Lot: Saturday, Jan. 18 through Jan. 21
  • Point Panic Lot: Tuesday, Jan. 21 through Jan. 25
  • Diamond Head-end of Main Lot: Saturday, Jan. 25 through Jan. 27

Public access to these lots will be restricted more than a day before the scheduled work begins for that particular portion. For example, the Ewa-side of the main lot will be closed to the public beginning at 10 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16. Any unauthorized vehicles remaining within these areas during the posted times will be subject to tow at the owner's expense.

The nightly park closure remains in effect, from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m., during this project.

The nearly $448,000 contract for the project was awarded to Oahu Sealcoating & Paving, LLC.

We appreciate the patience and understanding of park users while these improvements are being made and the parking lots are closed.

In addition to this repaving project, city crews and contractors have been busy renovating various park facilities within Kaka‘ako Waterfront Park. This includes repairs to the bathrooms and irrigation. Portions of this park remain closed as part of these renovations, which began in November 2019.
