City unveils restart plan for road tests by appointment only

HONOLULU -- The City and County of Honolulu announced today that hopeful drivers across Oahu can circle a date on calendars to test their skills on the road.

All road tests will resume on an appointment-only basis at driver licensing centers on Monday, July 6. This restart plan includes behind-the-wheel tests to get a commercial driver license.

Driver licensing centers on Oahu canceled more than 5,000 road tests scheduled between March 23 and July 5 to help citywide efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

"Our first effort will be to contact all applicants who paid for a road test, but had their appointment canceled during our closure, and offer rescheduling options," said Sheri Kajiwara, director of the city's Department of Customer Services. "We are going to do the very best we can to efficiently meet the surge in demand while providing an environment that protects the health and safety of everyone."

All appointments already scheduled from July 6 and on will be honored. Those with appointments are asked to report as scheduled. To accommodate the demand, additional examiners will be brought on board and road tests hours will be increased.

Both the applicant and examiner are required to wear face coverings, keep the air conditioner in the vehicle turned off and windows rolled down during the test. Applicants must also pass a standard health screening and temperature check prior to getting into a vehicle with an examiner.
